Loving Father, Brother, Uncle,

Husband, Counselor, and Friend, Albert G. Simms III, passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in Pilar, New Mexico the morning of October 5th, 2022. Albert was born in New York City and grew up between Albuquerque, NM and his family’s ranch in Fort Garland, Colorado. He attended Albuquerque Academy, Taft Preparatory School, Williams College, and following his service in the Vietnam War, the University of New Mexico Law School. He first opened practice in his native Albuquerque but soon followed his heart north to Taos, where he built a reputation as a foremost expert in the complex, convoluted, and often times contradictory field of Northern New Mexico Property and Water Law.

While his legal practice partially satisfied his inquisitive intellect and natural penchant for “unsolvable” problems, Albert’s true passions always remained pastoral in nature. Whether it was tending the family ranch holdings, or most especially his beloved heirloom apple farm along the banks of the Rio Grande, ranching was in his blood and he was always at his happiest out of doors working the land, and found his greatest joy in the sharing of the fruits of his labors of love with family and friends, particularly his famous “Old Family Recipe” dill pickles.

Albert will always be fondly remembered for his honesty, integrity, generosity and humility; his insight, wisdom and “outside the box” approach to life; and perhaps most endearingly, his pure charm and the mischievous half-smile that accompanied his quick wit and uniquely understated wry sense of humor.

Albert is preceded in death by his parents Albert G. Simms II and Barbara Young Simms; his sister Leslie Anne Simms; and his son Jesse Mechem Simms. Albert is survived by his remaining children, Ian Taylor Simms, Kaiann Mechem Macleay, and Adam Mechem Simms; his siblings, Margaret Clopton Simms, Frank Young Simms and Mary Field Simms; his wife; his extended family and a myriad of dear friends.

As anyone who knew Albert would attest, he was truly

“Quite a Guy.”
